Abstract

Different interpretations of the word "atmawa" in verse 196 of Surah Al-Baqarah, as well as the narrations, have led to two different approaches among Imami jurists and commentators regarding the obligation or desirability of performing Umrah alone, if possible, for those who have not traveled to Mecca. Some have issued fatwas that say it is not obligatory, while others have issued fatwas that say it is obligatory. There are two verses in the Quran, which have different interpretations and narrations, which have led to this disagreement, and the aforementioned verse is one of them. After examining the word atmwa in early and later dictionaries, the present study examined the views and documents using a descriptive-analytical method and concluded that this word in the aforementioned verse means "to establish" and the narrations of the revelation indicate that Umrah Mufradah is obligatory for those who are able to perform it. The well-known view that Umrah Mufradah is not obligatory for those who are not able to perform it refers to a time when the ability to perform Umrah was not separate from the ability to perform Hajj. However, today, given the difference in the costs of Hajj Tamattu' and Umrah Mufradah, the issue has changed and it is possible for an individual to be able to perform Umrah but not for Hajj. Therefore, Umrah Mufradah is obligatory for such individuals, and at the very least, it is a requirement of obligatory precaution.
