Analyzing the Ijtihadi method (Islamic juristic/ Islamic legal reasoning), especially in a comparative manner, is one of the modern, efficient, and popular research methods in the current academic community. Based on this, the present research is specifically aimed at explaining the ijtihad method of Imam Khomeini and Ayatollah Khu’i, as well as clarifying the way in which these two Islamic jurists have derived legal rulings. The present research, using an analytical and descriptive method, has inductively studied the book of al-Khalal fi al-Salat (Arabic:الخلل فی الصلاه) by Imam Khomeini and the discussions on al-Khalal fi al-Salat in the encyclopedia of Muhaqqiq Khoei . By extracting the method of each of these two scholars through the analysis and comparison conducted, it has been determined that their process and utilization of jurisprudential and usuli (principles of jurisprudence) rules in the method of deriving rulings are different from each other, although the outcome of the fatwa (legal opinion) is often the same. The focal point in the process of derivation in the comparative method of Ayatollah Khu’i is the focus on the rule and the application of the rule. By rule, it is meant broadly encompassing usuli (principles of jurisprudence), fiqhi (jurisprudential), and rijali (relating to the science of narrators) rules. And the purpose of focusing on its application (of the rule) is a decisive and completely clear commitment to its result and adherence to the exact(essential/core) outcome. While the central point in the analytical method of Imam Khomeini (RA) in the process of deriving rulings (istinbāṭ) is attention to all rules and striving to combine them, and finding a way, through this combination, to issue fatwas (legal opinions) on religious matters. The findings of the research indicate that Imam Khomeini predominantly has employed the analytical method, while Ayatollah Khu’i predominantly has used the comparative method. It is not the case that each of these two jurists exclusively(completely) relied on one specific method.
