Zakat is one of the obligatory acts of worship in Islam, producing various social, economic, and ethical benefits. One of the subsidiary issues relates to the items subject to zakat. Regarding this, two general categories of narrations exist: one limits the items to nine specific cases, while the other suggests the possibility of expanding zakat cases. Jurists have adopted three approaches to the latter narrations: rejection, interpreting as recommended actions, or interpreting as taqīyah (precautionary practice). This study employs a descriptive-analytical method and evidentiary sources to analyze these narrations. Following the examination and critique of each approach, results show that none effectively resolves the contradictions in narrations. Subsequently, a set of narrations is introduced as collective evidence, which includes factors such as the Prophet’s (pbuh) forgiveness regarding other cases, exemption of zakat on dates by Imam Kazim (pbuh), confirmation of zakat on rice for Iraqi people, and dependence of zakat items on infallible leader's opinion. The research concludes that zakat cases are contingent on temporal, spatial, or communal interests, and can be determined by the infallible Imam or righteous rulers of the Islamic state.
