One of the disputed issues in congregational prayer concerns the duty of the follower (ma’mum) when, during bowing (ruku’) behind the Imam, the Imam rises from ruku’ before the follower reaches it. This disagreement causes confusion among followers and raises certain challenges and doubts among congregants. Studies reveal five major opinions about this matter: 1. Choice between performing an individual prayer (forādā) and waiting state; 2. Choice among individual prayer, waiting, and following; 3. Choice between individual prayer and following; 4. Invalidity of the prayer; 5. Determination of the waiting state. The findings indicate that the popular view emphasizing the choice between individual prayer and waiting lacks sufficient strength, because the state of waiting is inconsistent with the customary notion of following (taba‘iyat) in the concept of congregation. Since iqtidā’ (following the Imam) requires the follower’s compliance with the Imam’s actions in prayer, in the discussed scenario, if the follower decides to continue the congregational prayer, he must follow the Imam and prostrate (Sujud) with him. The examination of narrations also confirms this understanding of iqtidā’. Therefore, in such a case, the follower should either intend individual prayer or, if continuing congregational prayer, perform the prostrations with the Imam, although this additional unit (rak'at) is not considered part of his prayer. Considering the aforementioned evidence, the stance of choosing between individual prayer and following, aligned with the concept of iqtidā’ and supported by narrations, appears stronger and more valid.
