The present research examines the issue of proxy (Niyābah) in Istikhārah (seeking divine guidance) from the perspective of Imami jurisprudence. Using a descriptive-analytical method, this study demonstrates that there is a consensus (Ijmāʿ) among jurists on the permissibility of the principle of proxy in Istikhārah. This ruling is founded upon the nature of Istikhārah as a form of supplication and seeking goodness, the absence of any explicit religious prohibition, and the continuous practice of the Imams (pbuh) and the religious community. Subsequently, the conditions of the proxy (Nāʾib), including puberty, sanity, faith, and perfect attributes such as piety, presence of heart, and knowledge of the etiquette of Istikhārah, are examined. Regarding the principal (Mustakhīr)—the one for whom the Istikhārah is performed—it is emphasized that while it is not a condition for him to be informed or to give permission, the existence of genuine bewilderment on his part is necessary. Finally, the jurisprudential ruling on proxy in Istikhārah through modern tools is explained. The results indicate that these tools are only valid if they serve as a means of communication with a real proxy (a human being) and not merely as software algorithms.
