Ablution (wuḍūʾ), as the most important form of legal purification, occupies a central position in Islamic jurisprudence, and any defect in its components or conditions can lead to its invalidity or to a mismatch between the "performed ablution" (wuḍūʾ māʾtī bih) and the "required ablution" (wuḍūʾ māʾmūr bih). The present study, using a descriptive-analytical method with a comparative approach and employing library-based tools, examines the various types of defects in ablution with a focus on the views of Imam Khomeini and compares them with the four Sunni schools of jurisprudence (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, and Hanbali). The findings show that Imam Khomeini, by relying on the principles of al-maysūr, al-farāgh, and al-tajāwuz, distinguishes between defects that are intentional, inadvertent, or caused by excusable ignorance. In contrast, Sunni jurists hold different views on matters such as intention, sequence, continuity, bandaging, and dissimulation (taqiyya). The most important points of divergence are as follows: regarding intention and sequence, three schools (except the Hanafi) agree with Imam Khomeini; regarding continuity, the Maliki and Hanbali schools are aligned with him; regarding bandaging, all schools agree on the permissibility of wiping; however, in the matter of the manner of wiping the head, the Maliki and Hanbali schools consider complete coverage obligatory, whereas Imam Khomeini and the Shafi'i school consider any amount sufficient. Moreover, in the matter of the feet, Imam Khomeini holds that wiping is required, while all Sunni schools consider washing the feet obligatory. In addition, dissimulation and wiping over leather socks (khuffayn) in Imami jurisprudence are regarded as valid and sufficient based on specific evidences, whereas such an extension does not exist in Sunni jurisprudence.
