Religious or divine sacred rites refer to certain objects, actions, and rituals that serve as signs for God and His religion, such as the rites of Ḥajj, the adhān, Friday prayers, and congregational prayers. Regarding religious rites, there are two major disagreements: first, concerning the concept and scope of religious rites -are they specific to the rites and sites of Ḥajj, or are they general? Second, concerning the prescriptive ruling (al-ḥukm al-taklīfī) of venerating (taʿẓīm) these rites, which is the subject of this article. In this regard, two opinions are observed among Imami jurists: 1. The obligation (wujūb) of absolutely venerating the rites; 2. The recommended status (istiḥbāb) of veneration, unless neglecting veneration leads to the desecration of religion. The primary foundation for the ruling of venerating rites is the Noble Qur’an. However, in addition to that, the Sunnah (tradition), life conduct (sīrah), and rational evidence have also been relied upon by proponents. The results of this research, which was conducted using a descriptive-analytical method and library data collection tools, indicate that the symbols are gradational (tashkīkī), meaning that at important levels which fulfill the essential objectives of religion and the school of thought (madhhab), veneration is obligatory, and at other levels, it is recommended. One of the important outcomes of this view is the possibility of change in the rites and the concepts they signify across different times and places.
