Shia Jurists (Arabic: فقهاfuqaha) regard puberty one of the general conditions for the Islamic religious obligation. In this context, a debate arises concerning discerning children who have not yet reached puberty whether their ritual acts are merely preparatory training or should be considered valid religious practices in sharīʿah (Arabic: شریعة) terms. After stating diverse scholarly positions, this study has conducted the detailed study of the two theories” legitimacy and illegitimacy of children’s acts of worship and has reviewed the evidence of these two theories alongside juristic critique and analysis. Additionally, special attention has been given to the relevant narrations (riwāyāt) on this subject, as despite the abundance of narrations being sources of sharīʿa rulings these narrations have not yet been comprehensively classified or subjected to in-depth analysis, and remain in their raw form within existing ḥadīth collections. This note has endeavored to compile, categorize, and reason from these narrations to examine the subject. This note which has been organized through a descriptive-analytical methodology demonstrates after Islamic jurisprudential examination, critique and analysis of the evidence that the view affirming the non-obligatory nature of religious duties for children, while simultaneously recognizing the legitimacy of their ritual practices, is substantiated by robust and conclusive evidence.
