The alteration and substitution of a vow (nadhr) is one of the highly disputed topics in Imami jurisprudence, which has long been a subject of debate among eminent jurists, resulting in two fundamental perspectives: permissibility and impermissibility of such change. The present research aims to analyze the permissibility or impermissibility of altering a vow in Imami jurisprudence, along with the relevant evidence, and to indicate the preponderant view in light of the proofs. The practical benefit of this discussion is to clarify the duty of an individual who has restricted their vow to a specific time or place, but is prevented from fulfilling it due to reasons such as the emergence of a more essential need, the existence of more deserving individuals, the difficulty of performing the vow, changed circumstances, or the like. Employing a descriptive-analytical method and utilizing library resources, the authors conclude that, considering the relevant narrations (riwāyāt), the principle of feasibility (qā`idat al-maysūr), the multiplicity of desired objectives, and the principle of conflict (qā`idat al-tazāḥum), alteration is possible and permissible in certain cases and under specific conditions.
